Las Vegas VacationIn the 19th century Las Vegas was a watering place for travelers headed for southern California. Around 1855-1857 the Mormons maintained a fort in Las Vegas. In 1864, Fort Baker was built by the U.S. army. In 1867 Las Vegas was separated from the Arizona Territory and joined to Nevada. Its main growth began with the completion of the railroad in 1905. According to the 1990 census the population of Las Vegas was 258,295 as of 2000 Las Vegas almost doubled 478,434. Las Vegas is the largest city in Nevada and the center of one of the fastest growing urban areas in the United States. Las Vegas main revenue is from hotels, gambling, resorts, entertainment, theme parks, construction of these, and other tourist-oriented industries. |
